A tree in your way?
Just build around it.
Another example.
This is the King of all build-arounds. In 1888 St.Joseph's Catholic Church wouldn't move, so The Joske Brothers Clothing And Dry Goods Merchants built around it.
This is now Rivercenter Mall.

The St. Joseph's case is classic. There's a church in a similar situation in downtown Toronto, surrounded by a large mall. It's the church that anchors Trinity Square, and provides plenty of photo opportunities.
